The Belgian sociologist Marcel Bolle de Bal recovers an old term, reliance — the act of re-linking, of creating a bond where there was separation. Morin adopts it and makes it the operative verb of complex thought. Distinguishing is no longer enough: we must re-link what we distinguish.
La etimología ya lo decía: complexus significa "lo que está tejido junto". Pensar complejo no es complicar — es no perder de vista el tejido. La religación es el antídoto exacto de la disyunción: donde una corta, la otra vuelve a anudar. The etymology already said it: complexus means "what is woven together". To think complexly is not to complicate — it is to never lose sight of the weave. Reliance is the exact antidote to disjunction: where one severs, the other ties back together.

Religar no es "todos uno", ni la masa que disuelve a la persona. La unitas multiplex conserva la diferencia mientras crea unión. Fundir es el sueño totalitario; religar es lo contrario: tejido, no fundido. Reliance is not "all one", nor the mass that dissolves the person. The unitas multiplex keeps difference while creating union. To fuse is the totalitarian dream; to re-link is its opposite: woven, not melted.

That is the basis of every community: distinct and united at once.
